Livestock Exhibits

Upon arrival, all livestock exhibits (including out of state entries) must present a current "Certificate of Veterinary Inspection" (CVI) form.

Pennsylvania Animals -         CVI issued after May 1, current year

Out of State Animals -           CVI Issued within 30 days prior to date of                                                           importation

ELIGIBILITY:  4-H Club members must have passed their 8th birthday but not have passed their 19th birthday by January 1 of the current year. Exhibitors must be members of a regularly organized 4-H Club, carrying a project in the field they wish to make entry and be under the supervision of the Pennsylvania State University Agricultural and Home Economic Extension Service by July 1 preceding the fair. Exhibits must have been selected through an elimination.

 Students enrolled in an accepted vocational school curriculum must be conducting a project in the class in which they wish to make an entry. Students enrolled in general home economics in a comprehensive high school are considered as qualifying. All entries shall be approved prior to the fair by a member of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Agriculture or Home Economics staff or their designated representative.

4H and F.F.A. FITTING & SHOWMANSHIP

4-H and FFA members may show either a market or breeding animal in the fitting and showmanship classes. The animal must be a project animal and it must be owned by the exhibitor. The exhibitor must show the same animal in both contests. The “Erie County Livestock Program Code of Ethics Regarding Quality Assurance and Animal Care” will apply throughout the fitting and showmanship classes. If it is determined by the 4-H Livestock Selection Committee an exhibitor has violated provisions of this code regarding fitting or other practices, the exhibitor will not be permitted to sell through the 4-H Livestock Sale at the Waterford Fair. 

 

                           

 

Fitting & Showmanship classes will be divided into nearly equal classes or sub-classes by the Department Chairs and their representatives at their discretion.

BEEF FITTING AND SHOMANSHIP CONTESTS

Exhibitors will fit their animals in the presence of a judge in accordance with the following additional rules that govern beef cattle fitting and showmanship contests.

1.          All age groups will have 10 minutes and to fit the right side of their animals

2.          Animals must be washed and dried prior to entering the ring and placed into chutes.

3.          Members only will be allowed in the chute area.

4.          Junior Members will be allowed an older member at chute side to provide guidance.  However, no fitting is to be                   accomplished by the older member.

5.          No blow dryers will be permitted in the contest area.  Clippers, combs, brushes and grooming products (aerosol                   and spray bottles), are the only equipment allowed.

6.          To compete for Grand Champion Fitter, first place winners from the junior, intermediate, and senior age groups                    will have 10 minutes to fit the left side of their animals.

7.          Showmanship classes will follow immediately after respective fitting classes.

USE CAUTION WHEN FITTING YOUR ANIMALS

Be sure to use only grooming products that are approved for use on meat and dairy animals when fitting your animals for show.  Unapproved products may contain ingredients that result in unacceptable residues in the meat or milk.  If your are not certain that a product is residue safe and approved for use on meat or dairy animals, do not use it!  **IMPORTANT**: If upon slaughter treatment with drugs, bio-logics, or any chemical from fitting products, is the cause of condemnation of a carcass, the loss of the carcass and any other damages will be borne by the exhibitor. 

GOOD HOUSEKEEPING AWARDS

Erie County 4-H and F.F.A. exhibitors who maintain the most attractive and sanitary exhibits will be eligible for special daily premiums.

 

Inspections will be made unannounced. Premiums will be awarded to clubs or chapters housing animals in the Erie County 4-H and F.F.A. designated areas. There will be no double premiums given.

 

Animals from one club or chapter must be grouped together to be judged, and the club or chapter exhibitor number must be clearly displayed.

NOTICE:  The listing of cattle entries closes August 19. Arrange for them by that time so that space can be reserved.

2.          OUT OF STATE CATTLE - “Certificate of Veterinary Inspection” (CVI) must be issued                        within 30 days prior to date of importation

3.          Entries must be in by August 19 on a completed entry form. It must have classes noted.

4.          4-H Club or FFA members must be present and have charge of their animals at the time               of judging.

5.          Only first and second place winners may enter Open Class competition.

Beef Cattle

1.   Entries must be received by August 19 and must show class.   

2.   2.00 per head/per department entry fee must accompany the entry blank.

3.   OUT OF STATE CATTLE—“Certificate of Veterinary Inspection” (CVI) must be issued within           30 days of prior to date of importation

4.    When on exhibition in the ring, each animal must be under halter and in charge of the                 owner. 

5.    Exhibits in these classes can also be entered in the open class. 

6.    All rules as to the time of entry and removal and fair regulations are the same as in the               open class competition. 

7.     All 4-H and FFA exhibitors must furnish proof that all entries are carried as                                      projects.

Sheep

1.     All animals must meet the health requirements listed under Department 4 and the health            certification area of the fair book.

2.     Entries must be received by August 19 and must show class.   $2.00 per head/per                    department entry fee must accompany the entry blank.

3.     OUT OF STATE SHEEP “Certificate of Veterinary Inspection” (CVI) must be issued within 30          days prior to date of importation.

4.     Junior Exhibitors must be present at the time of judging.

5.     Market lambs must be wethers or ewes exhibiting lamb teeth at Fair time.

6.     4-H and FFA members must have membership identification at entry time

7.     Those animals not being housed in the Erie County 4H and FFA Market Lamb area(s) must             be entered in accordance with the rules set forth under this section.

Swine
  1.   Entries must be received by August 19 and must show class.   $2.00 per head/per            department entry fee must accompany the entry blank.

  2.   ALL SWINE -  “Certificate of Veterinary Inspection” (CVI) or "Interstate Certificate of                  Veterinary Inspection" (ICVI) must be issued within 14 days of opening date of the fair.             Refer to DEPARTMENT 5 - SWINE for complete Swine health rules.

  3.   No breeding animals will be admitted to the Fair except for educational exhibits. Market          Swine must weigh a minimum of 200 lbs. and a maximum of 325 lbs.  One animal per              exhibitor.

  4.   4-H AND F.F.A SWINE ENTRIES ELIGIBLE FOR FITTING/SHOWMANSHIP AND GOOD              HOUSEKEEPING AWARDS.

  5.   Both barrows and gilts will be accepted for market classes. 

  6.   Market Swine will be divided into nearly equal classes or sub-classes by the Department          Chairs and their representatives at their discretion. There will be a maximum of 9                      classes/sub-classes with a minimum of 4 animals per class/sub-class.

  1. Entries must be received by August 19 and must show class.  

  2.  All entries must be mailed with a check made payable to:  The Waterford Fair Association, $2.00 per animal to:  Dale  Chapman,11362 West Greene Road, Waterford, PA 16441.  No phone nor hand  delivered entries will be accepted. Entries without entry fee will be returned.

  3.  OUT OF STATE GOATS -  “Certificate of Veterinary Inspection” (CVI) must be issued within 30 days prior to date of importation,.

  4.  Dairy Goats MUST conform to standards of the breed.

  5. 4-H DAIRY GOAT ENTRIES ELIGIBLE FOR FITTING/SHOWMANSHIP AND GOOD HOUSEKEEPING AWARDS.

section 6 - Market Goats

  1. All entries must be mailed with a check made payable to The Waterford Fair Association, $2.00 per animal  to:  Ed Hess, 10151 Hamot Road, Waterford, PA 16441 not later than August 19th.  No phone or hand delivered entries will be accepted. 

  2. OUT OF STATE GOATS -  “Certificate of Veterinary Inspection” (CVI) must be issued within 30 days prior to date of importation

  3. No goat weighing less than 60 lbs. and more than 125 lbs. will be accepted for show in market classes and must be female or castrated male.

  4. Market Goats must be castrated by the date animal is tagged.

  5. 4-H & F.F.A. MARKET GOAT ENTRIES ELIGIBLE FOR FITTING/SHOWMANSHIP AND GOOD HOUSEKEEPING AWARDS.

 

Market Goat classes will be divided into nearly equal classes or sub-classes by the Department Chairs and their representatives at their discretion.  There will be a maximum of 9 classes/sub-classes with a minimum of 4 animals per class/sub-class.
